Literature Text

After running through the small forest and crossing the bridge, leading to the tower, Grell and I reach the entrance of the unknown building. Then, without any hesitation, I slam my body against the door, causing the weak wood to break open. Once Grell and I step foot into the darkened room, we notice a figure standing in the middle of the room. I procced with caution, not knowing what to expect. Suddenly, I realize that the figure was just a young girl.

“Excuse me,” I start, “Can you help u-Aghh!!” Before I could even finish my question, the girl garbs hold of my neck. The movement was at such lightning speed that I didn’t have time to react. The strong force from the small hand manages to cut all airways from reaching my lungs. I grip onto the female’s arm and try to yank it off of my neck but to no avail. While I struggle against the girl’s strong grasp, I manage to croak out, “Grell! Help me!!”

“Don’t worry, C.L.!” Before I notice, a flash of silver passes through my sight. Then, the girl’s strong grasp loosens, and I was finally able to breath in some fresh air. But, with the sweet freedom, I knew exact what lengths Grell had to take to set me free.

“Grell! I didn’t mean to cu-“ I glance down at the young girl’s arms, expecting to find a pool of blood gushing out of the limbs, but only find a small pile of sand spilling out of the limbs. “She wasn’t human at all.”

                “I suppose not.”

“What the hell is this place?” I scan around the area of the room, trying to get an understanding of where exactly I was at.

Grell, who was copying my action, then gasps. “I remember.”

I look back at Grell. “Remember what?”

“This place. I know this place.”

                “Well, spit it out then!”

“This manor belonged to a doll named Drocell Kienz. A few years after his death, he was reanimated as a doll. Your father, Sebastian, and I had come across this place once, in order to rescue your mother. He used young girls to create dolls out of them, hence like the once you see here.” He points his hand towards the motionless body lying beside us.

“So, what? This puppeteer is planning to turn Bell into a doll!”

“That’s what he planned to do with your mother last time.”

I grasp onto my hair. “Then, we have to save Bell!!”

“But, I can’t be certain that it is him.”

                “What are you talking about?”

“Last I could remember, Drocell was killed.”

                “Then, who’s controlling these dolls?”

All of a sudden, a door on the opposite side of the room slams open, causing Grell and I to turn our attention there to understand what was going on. There were six, to what I presume, dolls, or girls (I couldn’t understand what they actually were), standing in the doorway. Then, a ginger-haired man wearing a blue tailcoat emerges from the darkness and stands behind the protection of the young girls.

                “Who is that?”

                “I don’t believe it.”

“What, now?! What don’t you believe?!”

Grell points towards the ginger. “That’s Drocell Kienz!! He’s suppose to be gone for good.”

                “Well, then he reanimated again.”

Drocell glances up at us with his emotionless, purple glass eyes. “That doll was a complete failure, as always. So, I thought to myself: I must make them stronger. Stronger like my master has insisted.”

“Who’s your master now?” Grell asks. “Who’s pulling your strings?”

Drocell, ignoring the Grim Reaper completely, begins singing a familiar tune. “Build them up with iron and steel, iron and steel, iron and steel. Build them up with iron and steel, my fair lady.”

With that, he steps back and disappears into the shadows, leaving Grell and I to handle the dolls ourselves. Then, just as he leaves our sights, the six dolls came charge at us. Before I could even make a single move, planning to charge towards the dolls and fight them off to the best of my ability, Grell dashes forward and makes the first move. He slices his death scythe through the air and cuts through the dolls like butter. Once the scythe cuts through their body, the dolls fall limp and reveal their shining, metallic insides.

“This is so much better than last time. Nothing is better to pierce through than my Death Scythe,” Grell exclaims. I’ve got to admit; it did look like he was having a blast cutting through each of the doll’s bodies. Before I knew it, Grell took down all six of the dolls in our way. But, before I had the chance to celebrate,  more dolls came crashing through the door. Their numbers were doubling by the second. I don’t even know if we’re going to make it out of here alive.

I look over at the Reaper. “Grell, can you handle them by yourself? The sooner I find Bell, the sooner we can get the hell out of here.”

“Don’t mind me, C.L.; go get your friend!” he chants.

                I nod.

Then, I make my way towards the door that was left open; the exact one that Drocell went through. I pass through the doorway, fortunately dodging each doll in my path (I was able to keep my head for another day). With the lack of light that I was given, I try to navigate myself through the endless hallway, trying to find the puppeteer behind all this havoc.

“Build them up with iron and steel, iron and steel, iron and steel. Build them up with iron and steel, my fair lady,” echoes throughout the hallway. No matter what I did, even by covering my ears, nothing could drown out the haunting melody. As I advance through the hallway, the song only got progressively louder until it was practically deafening.

While I was too distracted by the deafening noise, I didn’t notice the figures at the other end of the hallways until it was too late. I stare at the three figures in front of me. There was no way I could get passed them. I glance at the door beside and pushing myself through the doorway. I hoped this way it would provide me with an escape route, but it was to no avail. The room I crashed into held no escape route. The only way I could get out of this room was the same way I got in.

While taking in paced breaths, I scan the room then twist my body around to make my leave. But, once I made a complete 180 degree turn, I scream. Those same three figures were right behind me. Those three dolls were blocking my only exit. I was completely trapped. As I stood, frozen in place, I was able to get a good look at the three dolls in front of me. They didn’t have the shiny, porcelain skin the other dolls had. They didn’t even have those shiny glass eyes the others had. Heck, I couldn’t look into their eyes; their eyes were hidden behind a piece of cloth. No matter how much I could scan these dolls, I knew these beings were more human than they were dolls.

But, before I could even bring together my findings, one of the mindless beings charges towards me, followed by the other two. Their mouths were wide open. They were ready to bite down into my flesh.

                “These aren’t dolls; they’re zombies!!” I shout.

Before I could react to their swift movements, one of the beings bites into my arm, puncturing through my skin. I let out an ear-pinching scream. Nothing could describe the amount of pain I was in. It didn’t even help when my blood was oozing down my skin and dripping onto the carpeted floor. Then, the other zombie-like creature came charging towards me while I stood in place. There was nothing I could do to escape them. Was this going to be it? Was I going to die here?

Just then, before they had the chance to get a taste of my flesh, the beings’, including the one clamping down on my arm, heads were completely cut away from the rest of their bodies. Just as the head lands on the floor, so did their bodies.

Suddenly, the room was illuminated. The candles surrounding the room flickered on. With the light, I was able to perfectly see the beings’ mangled bodies lying on the cold floor.

“Catherine,” Sebastian speaks up. I jump and stare at the man, who simply stood beside the mangle bodies.

                “Sebastian.”

“Why would you come here? And, without informing me for that matter.”

“I didn’t need your help. I could’ve gotten Bell myself. Besides, Grell was with me.”

“Well, that was a foolish mistake. One of the Bizarre Dolls could’ve killed you.”

“So, that’s what they are,” I whisper.

“Come on, we must leave before you actually get killed.” He grips onto my uninjured arm and begins pulling me away the room.

“I’m not going anywhere!” I struggle to free my arm against his strong grasp. “I have to save Bell! I can’t let her die!”

                “She’s not worth the struggle.”

                “She’s my best friend!”

“But, she’s a human. She won’t mean anything once she’s dead.”

With that, I, miraculously, manage to free myself. Then, as Sebastian turns to face my, my palm collides with his pale cheek. A red bruise immediately forms on the exact spot.

“How dare you speak such foul language against Bell. She’s one of the few people who are the closest thing to family that I have left. But, you would never understand. You’ll never understand anything about love, you heartless demon!!”

Sebastian merely stood there, wide-eye. He couldn’t even bother to utter a single word.

“If you’re not going to help, then leave. I never want to see a stupid excuse for a demon like you.”

With that, I run the opposite direction, leaving behind the demon. The demon who was frozen in place. His shock couldn’t even allow him to make a single move. He just stood there while the distance between us grew. I know the words I said were harsh, to harsh to even say to any human being, but I couldn’t help myself from speaking my mind, from speaking the truth.

But, I couldn’t stop now and think about the consequences of my actions. I need to rescue Bell. I didn’t need my best friend to turn into a doll, or worse into a Bizarre Doll. I didn’t need her to turn into my zombie best friend. I have to save her before it’s too late.
